FD Luxe- The New Creative Class of 2013
THE CONNECTOR Nicole Cullum Horn — A Dallas native with a bachelors of fine art in painting from the University of Kansas, Nicole Cullum Horn is on our art radar for 2013. She has worked on the boards of Art Conspiracy and La Reunion TX. She co-curates, with her husband Scott Horn, the tiny Magnolia Gallery inside the Magnolia movie theater in West Village. And she has also created public art projects and installations, such as the Möbius Bench, with Erik Glissmann, a gigantic loop of wood planks and metal that doubles as a DART stop on Fort Worth Avenue near Pittman Street. Nicole’s obsession is, indeed, helping Dallas connect with its local artists. Despite an abundance of publicly and privately displayed art, there is a lack of representation from within. Horn is helping put Dallas’ own creativity right before our very eyes. —Brittany Winter

Rising Dallas Design Star Nicole Cullum Horn on The Nate Berkus Show
August 25 – DALLAS – When the phone rang and The Nate Berkus show was on the other line, Nicole Cullum Horn was thrilled. The show, hosted by Oprah Winfrey’s favorite designer, is a regular favorite of Nicole’s. She was tapped by the Dallas charity Dwell with Dignity to help makeover the apartment of a mother and two young children who were relocating from a homeless shelter. The Nate Berkus Show is highlighting the efforts of this charity to kick off their new season, and flew in their design team to partner on the project.
The episode featuring the team’s good work airs this upcoming Wednesday, August 31st at 11:00 am and 2:00 p.m. on NBC 5 in Dallas.
Nicole’s studio, Modern Relics, has gained recognition in Dallas design circles for breathing new life into outdated furniture, and for collaborations with the Fairmont Hotel and Lucia Restaurant. When the call came Nicole was able to whip up a support team and turned out 8 pieces of furniture in less than a week to meet the Producer’s deadline.
In October 2010, Nicole’s revamped dining room chair won 2nd place in a Dwell with Dignity contest judged by a panel of well-known designers and design bloggers including Jonathan Adler and Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge.
“Refinishing a piece of furniture not only changes the piece but it can change the feel of an entire room,” says Nicole. “It allows you to reuse good furniture while creating something new and appealing at the same time. Being able to use this approach to make this family’s space feel like a home was truly gratifying.”
